As part of CRI's mandate to build a national network to deliver medical education across Canada, instructor certification courses have been developed to ensure high quality course instruction. CRI Instructor Certification courses for both High-Fidelity Simulation Modules and CRI Skills and Knowledge Modules will be offered to professionals across Canada by CRI certified Master Instructors. Instructor Certification - High Fidelity Simulation
Objective
The primary objective of the CRI High-Fidelity Simulation Instructor Certification course is to provide the participant with the skills needed to become a fully qualified high-fidelity simulation program instructor.
Upon successful completion of the High-Fidelity Simulation Instructor Certification course, the participant shall be able to:
- Understand the principles of effective crisis management instruction including leadership, communication, situational awareness, and problem solving and resource utilization.
- Understand and practice the principles for giving effective feedback to high-fidelity simulation participants.
- Provide feedback on crisis resource management skills to participants who are using a variety of levels of difficulty in high-fidelity simulation scenarios.
- Understand the basic operation of the simulation hardware and software set-up
- Operate the simulator hardware and software
Target Population
The CRI High-Fidelity Simulation Instructor Certification course targets physicians who wish to participate in the CRI National ACES Program as High-Fidelity Simulation Module instructors. As such the intended audience includes:
- Intensivists
- Emergency Room Physicians
- Internal Medicine Physicians
- Anesthesiologists
- General Surgeons
- Critical Care Medicine Fellows
Given the need for clinical expertise, residents and/or medical students are excluded from participation.
Sepsis Course Syllabus and Course Website
The syllabus consists of a is a pre-course handout and online learning resource that includes:
• Epidemiology of Sepsis and Septic shock
- Sepsis terminology (SIRS Paradigm)
- Pathophysiology of Sepsis and Septic shock
- Therapy of Sepsis and Septic shock
- Recommended reading list
- Vasoactive medication preparation and infusion protocols
- Step-by-step algorithm
CRI Instructor Certification Syllabus
The CRI Instructor Certification syllabus is intended to be used as a reference manual, which contains the core materials to be presented within each CRI Education module. The syllabus also includes information of a more detailed nature that compliments the information provided during the course. The manual also contains reference materials and resources to enable physicians to pursue additional topics not covered in the manual or the ACES course. The final component of the manual will be several appendices that will enhance the core content of the CRI High-Fidelity Simulation Instructor Certification course, namely:
- Introduction to computer simulation in medical education
- Principles of crisis resource management (CRM) in the critically ill patient
- Principles of giving feedback
- Principles of giving difficult feedback
- Primer to simulation instruction and operation (given at the course location)
Instructor Certification Eligibility
CRI sets the highest standards for education in the design of its educational modules, courses and programs. This also applies to its instructors. Physicians who are interested in pursuing instructor certification may apply in writing to the CRI Executive Board for instructor eligibility.
CRI members must meet four conditions for eligibility as a CRI High-Fidelity Simulation Module instructor, as follows:
1.CRI Membership
- Only CRI members are eligible for status as a CRI instructor.
2. Clinical Expertise / Successful Completion of Educational Module
- CRI instructor candidates may be specialists with a pre-existing high level of clinical expertise. In such cases, exemptions for immediate approval of clinical expertise eligibility for certain CRI Education modules (e.g. Anesthesiologist with Airway module) may be granted. Such exemptions can only be granted at the discretion of CRI's Executive Board. Again, application to the CRI Executive Board is required for approval of eligibility without prior successful completion of the Education module. Otherwise, successful completion of the Education module as a participant is required to demonstrate clinical expertise. While successful completion of the CRI Education module is required, it is not a guarantee of eligibility as a potential CRI instructor.
3 & 4 Successful Completion of Instructor Certification Course
- CRI members who have met the first two conditions for eligibility must also successfully complete the Instructor Certification course in order to become eligible as a CRI instructor. Attendance and participation at the Instructor Certification course is required, but not sufficient for successful completion of the course.
In order to successfully complete the Instructor Certification Course, applicants must demonstrate the following:- The ability to operate a simulated scenario independently
- The ability to identify crisis resource management issues in simulator scenarios
- The ability to give appropriate feedback to simulation participants, including feedback in difficult scenarios
- The CRI Master Instructor in attendance for the Education module will determine success of the Instructor-in-Training. Applications for review of Master Instructor decisions may be directed to the CRI Executive Board. Final authority on granting of eligibility for potential instructors rests with the CRI Executive Board following successful delivery of educational Module with Supervision from a Master Instructor.
- Once an instructor candidate has successfully completed the Instructor Certification Course, they will be required to act as instructor for the educational module with a Master Instructor in attendance. Successful delivery of the Education module will complete the last requirement for eligibility as a CRI instructor.
